ALLICO.ZIP compiled by Russell Mueller [76662,1623] 05/05/91
The biggest icon collection yet found on Compuserve. As the person
responsible for the first attempt at compiling all of the icons on
Compuserve Information Service, I salute all the authors of these
magnificent, colorful icons, and those who have used my file as a
starting point for their own icon collections.
-- Russ Mueller
Adapted for the Norton Icon Editor by Bob Staudenmaier, Goleta CA 1/13/93
==========================================================================
Now Norton Desktop/Win users can enjoy a large, convenient selection of over
3500 icons right from the Norton Desktop Editor! Special Tip -- "Drag" and
"Drop" any of these .NIL files onto the desktop "Viewer" icon for an informative
display!
Orginally, Russ Mueller had compiled these icons alphabetically by title --
A.ZIP, B.ZIP, etc. In building these libraries, I tried to stick as closely as
possible to his original scheme and imported the icons in alphabetical order.
Therefore, the .NIL files have the following contents:
NILICON1.ZIP - COMSERV1.NIL - Russ Mueller's 1.ZIP to A.ZIP to C.ZIP
COMSERV2.NIL - '''''''''''''' C.ZIP to F.ZIP
COMSERV3.NIL - '''''''''''''' F.ZIP to M.ZIP
NILICON2.ZIP - COMSERV4.NIL - '''''''''''''' M.ZIP to P.ZIP
COMSERV5.NIL - '''''''''''''' Q.ZIP to T.ZIP
COMSERV6.NIL - '''''''''''''' T.ZIP to Z.ZIP + "bad" icons(*)
(*) - Oddly, Norton's Icon Editor refused to import about 1 out of every 20 of
Russ' icons because they contained some kind of irregularity. These "bad" icons
were later repaired using the NICONFIX utility and imported into the end of
COMSERV6.NIL. The NICONFIX utility works well and is available on Symantec's
BBS at 408-973-9834 (9600) and 408-973-9598 (2400). (Note -- Symantec's doc
doesn't mention that NICONFIX is a DOS application!)
To those of you who are familiar with Norton's Icon Editor, you know that
the editor can only (ugh!) import one icon at a time. You may, then, have
deduced that Bob Staudenmaier is either blind, insane, or missing a thumb. To
find the answer to this mystery, look for the file NILBUILD.WBT or NILBUILD.ZIP
on this board!!
Lastly, I do not recommend that anyone add any more icons to these libraries.
The Norton Icon Editor uses a tremendous amount of system GDI resources and
pretty much has these exhausted, regardless of free system memory, after reading
only 350K .NIL file. If you make any of these .NIL files too big, the Norton
Icon Editor will not be able to read it in, and the file will become worthless
because you won't be able to trim it.
Special thanks to:
------------------
Russ Mueller - even though he thinks "Zippy" is "Humpty
Dumpty" and "Hobbes" is "Garfield"
Symantec - for providing an excellent batch language
Kensington Ltd. - for quickly replacing my worn-out trackball
Compuserve does not provide adequate service to arcane wildernesses, like
Santa Barbara, but you may FAX me or leave a VOICE message at (805)685-4751.
